Relapse Prevention Plan Essay

Jed, a 38 †year old welder, joined up with the treatment community after his capture coming about because of plastered driving (DUI/DWI) (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, n.d.). His attorney has exhorted him to quit drinking and get treatment until his preliminary date, which is in inexact two months. Jed doesn't accept that he will serve any prison time, however feels that treatment could help reinforce his legal dispute (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, n.d.). In this paper, I will make a backslide counteraction plan that will help Jed as he goes into his treatment program. This paper will likewise demonstrate approaches to recognize the notice indications of backslide. A backslide starts some time before the individual really gets a beverage or medication (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)- Department of Health and Human Services, 2007). Most capable progressive admonition signs that restore refusal and result into extreme agony calls for self-medicine with liquor or different medications or both which is fundamentally a respectable thought. It's anything but a cognizant undertaking. The admonition signs for this situation are known to grow unexpectedly and intuitively. Inferable from that reality that relatively few recuperating individuals are constantly instructed on the most ideal approaches to perceive and mange backslide cautioning signs, they can't recognize them up to the moment that they begin feeling unendurable agony. Stage 1: Stabilization Backslide counteraction arranging will most presumably not work if the relapser isn't calm and in charge of himself (Addiction in ladies, 2010). Detoxification and temperance are imperative for the backslide avoidance intend to work effectively. Having as a main priority that a great many people who backslide are harmful, regardless of whether they are calm, it will even now be extremely hard for them to think unmistakably recall things and deal with their feelings. The side effects would decline regardless the individual gets segregated from the general public or when he experiences pressure. It is fitting to move gradually and center around the nuts and bolts and for this situation, the inquiry here ought to be â€Å"What is it that you have to do to abstain from drinking today?† Stage 2: Assessment This progression targets recognizing the dynamic example of issues that resulted into the past backslides and afterward discover answers for the torment coming about because of such issues. This would be joined by the remaking of the current issues, the liquor and substance use history, life history and recovery backslide history. Through the recreation and introduction of issues, the now and here issues that remain to make prompt danger restraint can be pinpointed and emergency plans created to determine such issues. Stage 3: Relapse Education Relapsers must be comfortable with the backslide procedure and the most ideal approaches to oversee it. Including the family and different backers is an extraordinary thought. The training ought to endeavor to stress four principle messages: First, backslide is a conventional and a characteristic procedure in the recuperation out of the compound reliance. One ought not be embarrassed about it like on account of Jed who â€Å"gets jumpy† when he attempts to avoid drinking, feeling â€Å"closed in or like he is suffocating†. He likewise can't envision how to disclose to his mates why he isn't going along with them in the bars. Besides, individuals are not out of nowhere taken alcoholic. There are progressive notice sign examples that demonstrate they are gradually trimming in once more. Such signs must be perceived when one is calm. Thirdly, after they are recognized, the recuperating people can get the chance to figure out how to oversee such backslide cautioning signs when calm. Also, the last one is that expectation is genuine. Jed once went to a couple of AA gatherings, yet didn't feel that AA was useful: â€Å"It was tuning in to a ton of folks whining†¦.† This ought to and will in all likelihood change in the event that he goes to a talk that depicts the normal admonition signs that go before backslide to synthetic use. Stage 4: Warning Sign Identification Relapsers ought to have the option to decide the issues that came about into backslide. The principle objective here is to list individual notice signs that made them move from a condition of stable recuperation right back to chemicalâ use. There is barely at any point simply a solitary admonition sign. Normally a progression of caution signs create consistently to make backslide. The combined impact is the thing that wears them out. A definitive admonition sign is essentially last blow. Lamentably most relapsers think it is the last admonition sign that caused everything. Thus, they will in general accept the early and progressively fragile admonition signs that prompts the last debacle. Stage 5: Follow-up The admonition signs are unbound to change with progress in recuperation (Field, Caetano, Harris, Frankowski and Roudsari, 2009). Every one of the stages engaged with the recuperation procedure has particular admonition signs. The capacity to manage the notice indications of one phase of recuperation doesn't guarantee that one will realize how to deal with the notice indications of the following stage. The backslide avoidance plan in this manner must be refreshed all the more regularly which ought to be; month to month for the initial three months, quarterly for the initial two years, and every year from that point. Call now for guaranteed backslide avoidance help. References Dependence in ladies., (2010). Harvard Mental Health Letter, 26(7), 1â€3. Field, C. A., Caetano, R., Harris, T. How to Make Friends

How to Make Friends For whatever reason, I’ve been getting a lot of tumblr questions lately about making friends. People asked me how to make friends in college, in high school, in general, if freshman orientation is clique-y like CPW seems to be, confessed that they are intimidated by such a new environment, and many other concerns. I’ve even received a few questions from fellow MIT students this year, asking how to make better, more meaningful friendships, or be friends with more people, when they feel too isolated or introverted to make friends. These questions were hard to answer, because I’ve actually never really thought about making friends as a deliberate process. I sort of felt like I just ran into people as I went about my life, and some of them happened to be people I really “clicked with”, and we became close. When I started trying to think about how I really became friends with all my friends, particularly my close friends, I realized that yes, a lot of it was due to having a more outgoing personality. But it wasn’t inherent, in that, it was due to things everyone else can pretty easily do, too. I just happen to like doing them a lot. When it comes to simply making friends in general, I’d say that it does require effort. You have to create opportunities to make friends, with the understanding that you’re not doing it because you particularly want something out of someone, but because you enjoy sharing a human connection, that you want to give as much as you’d like to receive. How do you create opportunities? Well, you do have to leave your room and do things (I know, shocker) but it doesn’t have to be huge and intense and difficult. I moved dormitories this year, and actually didn’t know anyone in House 4 of New House. I became friends with the people in House 4 because I walked into the lounge and introduced myselfthat’s a way to create an opportunity. I then would often walk into the lounge and say hi to whoever was in there, ask what they were up to, strike up conversations. The first few times were admittedly not easywhen we’re around people we don’t know that well, we tend to be on alert, and it’s easy (especially when psets are happening) to convince ourselves that not making the effort to socialize is our best bet. But it takes time and repeated interactions to become comfortable with people. Have faith that most people (especially around MIT as far as I can tell) are pretty friendly. House 4 certainly is! They were very open and made me feel very welcome. Now, I can’t believe I’ve only known them for a year. It always feels like longer. Thanks to (from left to right) Kris W. 18, Alex P. 18, Sarah A. 18, Karia D. 18, Kevin L. 18, Alex M. 18, Megan P. 18, and Anika Y. 18 (not pictured) for making House 4 feel like home~ :) To create opportunities for friendship, you have to put yourself out there in a lot of small ways. You have to sit in the lounge and talk to people, ask one of your classmates if they’d like to study together, make the effort to eat lunch or dinner in the dining hall with someone new, go to a study break or other events and introduce yourself to people. And then, to become friends (rather than just acquaintances) with people, you have to have these interactions repeatedly. When it comes to making closer, more intimate friendships, I will say two things, one is that admittedly part of that formula is random and uncontrollable, and another is that it still requires effort. Becoming close with someone also takes time and repeated interaction, with an emphasis on repeated interaction. But the types of interaction you have are important. I study together with a lot of people a lot of the time, but the people I consider my closest friends I sometimes see much less often during the week. My friend Kevin P. ‘18 and I are very close, and while we hang out a lot, sometimes a week or two will pass without us seeing each other. But whenever we do hang out, it’s often off campus, and we tend do stuff together (often with my other good friend, Andreea M. ‘18) that’s a little removed from the academic life of college. Once during freshman year, I was tired from the week and taking a nap in my room, but Kevin really wanted to go to Chinatown. He proceeded to w ake me up by blasting loud, traditional Chinese music from his phone and get our other friends to almost drag me out of my lofted bed in Simmons until I agreed to go on this adventure with them. It was a lot of fun, and we ate some great sushi, and that’s now a story we laugh about often. But before I agreed to go, I was feeling stressed and thought I wouldn’t have the energy or the time. Making close friendships means making the effort (like Kevin did) to invite your friends out to do things (perhaps not quite so obnoxiously depending on how close you are already) and, on the flip side, making time in your busy life to say yes to those invitations, or sincerely reschedule hang out time if you can’t make it. However, that Kevin, Andreea and I are such good friends is not only because we put in effort, but also because we want to put in that effort, and we really enjoy hanging out with each other. That part really is kind of random and up to God, the universe, whomever you believe is responsible for the vicissitudes of life. One of the things I like so much about MIT is that so many incredibly different people are close friends. Kevin is a Filipino-American guy from Alaska, Andreea is a Romanian-American girl from Florida, and I am a Chinese-Ethiopian-American girl from Colorado. There’s a lot of things that are really different about us, and no particular reason that we should be friends, other than the most important reason of allthat we have similar values and we all support each other. If it werent for all getting into MIT, Andreea mused to me once, theres probably no way wed have met. Isnt that weird? Kevin and Andreea agreed to take a selfie with me specifically for this blag post (true frandship!). Were kind-of-not-really-working in the Starbucks on Boylston St. in Boston. So, the only suggestion I can give in helping others find their closest friends is simply to again create more opportunities for getting to know people, which increases the likelihood of running into someone who you really “click with”, someone who has that quality we can’t quite rationally define. And when you do find those people, really put in the effort to hang out and keep in touch. When it comes to being a wide-eyed froshling (freshman) at MIT (or any other college), the best advice I can give you is don’t worry and don’t freak out, although to some degree everyone freaks out a little bit and that’s normal. Going to college is a lot of adjustment! So many new people to meet, and a completely new place to live and have to know your way around. Often, it’s the first time really having to start from scratch when it comes to making friends since middle school or high school. It gets better. You’ll meet a lot of people all at the same time during freshman orientation, but slowly, it will become apparent who your friends are, or even who your potential friends are. Don’t worry if it takes a whileyou didn’t become close with your high school friends overnight either. When people say “take advantage of pass no record”, in my opinion that means taking some time away from your school work to really meet your fellow classmates and become friends with the m. Having a social support network is very important in college. If you feel up to it, join clubs and student groups too! (Shameless plug: all of you should join MIT Chinese Students’ Club when you get here, as well as the Ethiopian-Eritrean Students’ Association!) A lot of them are lots of fun, fulfilling, and provide both an opportunity to meet people and to do something that’s not school, which is important (just be careful not to overload yourself). Also, don’t think that your old friends aren’t still incredibly important. I keep in touch with my high school friends through various group chats and this other really cool thing where we rotate mailing a journal to each other**. My friend Amber G. 18, who I met through MIT Chinese Students Club (the tank top there says MIT CSC). We have a tradition of taking at least one photo together at every single CSC event.   And, for a couple people who have asked me the hardest questions about friendship on tumblr, when it comes to making friends in an environment where you dislike most of the people, I can only say it is worth it. I didn’t like many of the people in my middle school and high school in suburban Colorado, and actually did experience many instances of bullying, racism, and classism from my classmates. In middle school, I made maybe 8 “friends” initially, one of whom is still a close friend today. The other 7 of them, unfortunately, were horribly mean girls who bullied me, and obviously I don’t consider them my friends anymore. 1 out of 8 are terrible odds, particularly when its not I made friends with 1 out of 8 people, its more like 7 out of 8 people treated me horribly. It would make you feel (as it made me feel for a while) that it isn’t worth it to try making friends. But I still think it was worth it to have met that one person, Ruby W. ‘18 at Colorado School of Mines, fo r whom I would deal with the other horribly mean girls all over again, many more times. She is one of few people I can honestly say I would walk through hell and back again for. Friendship isn’t about quantity. We don’t measure it in odds like 1 out of 8 or by how many Facebook likes we get or how many people we Snapchat. Like I said in an earlier paragraph, friendship is when you want to give as much as you receive from someone else, and sometimes, you are willing to give a lot more than you receive. You do that when your closest friends are in a bad place, when they might even let their stress out on you at times, but you still make the effort to spend time with them and help them get through whatever it is they’re going through, or help them become better people. My friend Mikael M. 16 is one of the few people whos openly criticized many of my habits and things Ive done, and I actually appreciate that a lot. Hes helped me see things I couldnt see in myself, and helped me become a better person. I am glad that he can be honest with me, and that I can seriously consider what he says, in mutual respect. Maybe, like some sociologists would argue, you give and receive nothing at times because of some imagined reciprocity, because hypothetically they would do that for you too. Even if that’s the real motivation for all of our actions, I take comfort in the fact that few people really think about that consciously on day to day basis. In their heads at that moment, they honestly do it because they love you. It’s the search for that type of connection that’s driven people to look for friendship, that I suppose caused so many people to ask me these questions on Tumblr. I think, if you have that sort of motivation, and you put in a little time and effort, you’re sure to find people who will become your friends. I won’t say that you’ll find lots of them, and that’s really not the point. But though you might not make friends with 8 out of 8 people, you might make the 1 out of 8 that matters, the 1 who is worth 8, or 800, or 8,000. And that’s the point. “Let me tell you about love, that silly word you believe is about whether you like somebody or whether somebody likes you or whether you can put up with somebody in order to get something or someplace you want or you believe it has to do with how your body responds to another body like robins or bison or maybe you believe love is how forces or nature or luck is benign to you in particular not maiming or killing you but if so doing it for your own good. Love is none of that. There is nothing in nature like it. Love is divine only, and difficult always.” Toni Morrison, Paradise You can read my some of my more extensive responses to friendship questions on tumblr at the following links: My Friend Ruby CPW/Freshman Orientation Struggles   Sophomore Year Struggles **Staying in touch with old friends

The Deconstruction of Binaries in Sula - Literature Essay Samples

In her fascinating 1973 novel, Sula, Toni Morrison deconstructs traditional understandings of the oppositions between self and other, rationality and emotion, and good and evil to reveal the similarities and differences among all people, adding up to nothing. If there is truly no superior option, what Morrison proposes by dissolving these ancient hierarchies is nothing more or less than the radical idea that there is no right way to lead a life. Many significant relationships depicted in Sula are of an intensely personal nature, to the point that multiple people are shown as one whole being. The most striking case of this is that of the deweys, who â€Å"[speak] with one voice, [think] with one mind† (39). Though they begin as three different boys, the Deweys soon meld into one, a â€Å"trinity with a plural name† a metaphor for societal conformity (38). Sula and Nel’s intense friendship, the focus of the novel, depicts an entirely different sort of closeness. The girls are two distinct beings, but they appear to have a psychic connection of sorts (58), having â€Å"made each other’s acquaintance in the delirium of their noon dreams† (51). The way they naturally begin to â€Å"use each other to grow on† (52) reflects some of the qualities of the deweys’ twinship and, like the deweys, the two girls are solitary creatures who seem destined to find each other, as each is essentia l to the other’s development. As Nel puts it when she realizes just how important Sula was to her: â€Å"We was girls together† (174). However, after adolescence, Nel and Sula grow apart, the latter continuing her girlish existence with an â€Å"experimental life† (118) while Nel marries and gets tied down by â€Å"virtue† (139), living exactly in accordance with what is expected of her. They are both lonely in the end, but as Sula proclaims on her deathbed, â€Å"my lonely is mine. Now your lonely is somebody else’s† (143). In this way, Morrison reveals that the price of belonging can be loss of identity. The binary of self and other is thus restored, but in doing so, Morrison reveals complexities in the nature of identity, including the fragmentation of a single person. Nel, through her life as a wife and mother, still contains the part of herself that was one with Sula. She â€Å"knew how to behave as the wronged wife† (120), but s till felt the immensity of her relationship with Sula. Though it is not seen through her unions with Sula and then with Jude, who obscured her in his search for manhood, there was a part of Nel that celebrated how herself she was. The same part of her that hoped to travel the world alone, and wanted â€Å"to bewonderful† (29) in a moment of â€Å"me-ness† that reaffirms the reader’s faith in the sanctity of self. By revealing the many aspects of a single person and the ties between many, Morrison effectively forces the reader to reconsider their understanding of identity. In Sula, there is a distinctly feminist approach to understanding the binary of emotion and rationality. In our culture the hierarchy distinctly favors rationality, â€Å"emotional† often being used as a term to weaken and discredit women. Early on, Sula and Nel become representative of this binary, â€Å"Nel [seeming] stronger and more consistent than Sula, who could hardly sustain any emotion for more than three minutes† (53). The hierarchy seems to be maintained as the two grow up and Sula remains wild, indulging her every whim. According to Nel, â€Å"she behaved emotionally and irresponsibly† (101), and could not be trusted with important decisions. Nel, on the other hand, seems to remain as sensible as can be, leading her life with â€Å"virtue†. However, upon closer inspection, this narrative soon overturns itself. For one thing, in their adult lives, Sula seems consistently happier than Nel, whose ego keeps her tied to a man who hopes, with her, to â€Å"make one Jude† (83). In Nel’s eyes, Sula’s return to the Bottom brings a sort of â€Å"magic† (95) into town, an â€Å"aura of fun and complicity†, that seems to be the influence of the freedom of letting one’s emotions roam free. Besides that, the actions that Nel considers irrational make perfect sense from Sula’s point of view, and are entirely successful in achieving what she expects them to. After she cuts off the tip of her finger, (53) the Irish boys never bother the girls again. And all Sula means to do by putting Eva in a home is to get rid of her, and that is exactly what she does. That is not to say that Sula’s actions are carefully calculated and thought out, but rather that doing what she wants tends to yield the desired result. By deconstructing the binary of emotion and rationality, Morrison puts the power back in emotion, and in doing so, overturns a longstanding patriarchal perception of what makes women weak. The stagnant community of the Bottom is one of the central characters, representing the accepted mainstream fear of any change or deviation from the norm. In the eyes of the people evil is evil and Sula comes to represent it. A good person maintains the status quo, being kind even when the kindness is insincere. Essentially, the goal of the community is to remain the same, merely surviving unavoidable change. Nel, whose hard working stoicism and suppression of all â€Å"sparkle or splutter† (83) wins her work and children, represents this comfort found in security. To Nel, â€Å"Hell is change† (108), while to Sula, â€Å"The real hell of Hell is that it is forever† (107). In the context of local society, Sula is a contrarian, rejecting the principles around which Bottom is built. The very idea of the foundation of one’s life being removed is too terrifying to confront, and so the citizens of Bottom do not, writing off Sula’s actions as evil to be s urvived. In reality, her need and desire for change, her terror that â€Å"Nothing was ever different† represents a restless spirit. Sula’s presence in the Bottom, just like all the other hardships they were able to meet and survive, does people good. The threat to their stable way of life gives them â€Å"leave to protect and love one another† (117). This phenomenon of bringing people closer to their feelings about each other and themselves is associated with Sula, as her presence brightened the whole world in Nel’s eyes (94). Reframing evil as the creation of change immediately breaks down the expected hierarchy, bringing the need for progress and the dangers of clinging to the past to the forefront on conversation. By deconstructing three binaries of identity, logic, and morality, Morrison offers a new understanding of the reasons rational and irrational that people upon, and to what extent potential consequences of a course of action affect their decisions. Strong ties to another person can alter the thought process from a logical assessment to an intuitive, joint experience, while the traditional hierarchy that favors rational, cautious thinking is overturned by establishing emotion as a valid guide to one’s actions. Finally, Morrison leads the audience to reevaluate the balance of consequences and intentions in attempting to categorize good or evil. Ultimately, the essential meaninglessness of our most valued concepts becomes empowering, giving one the freedom to do what they do, feel as they feel, and love who they love.

Levels and Scales of Measurement in Statistics

Level of measurement refers to the particular way that a variable is measured within scientific research, and  scale of measurement refers to the particular tool that a researcher uses to sort the data in an organized way, depending on the level of measurement that they have selected. Choosing the level and scale of measurement are  important parts of the research design process  because they are necessary for systematized measuring and categorizing of data, and thus for analyzing it and drawing conclusions from it as well that are considered valid. Within science, there are four commonly used levels and scales of measurement: nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio. These were developed by  psychologist Stanley Smith Stevens, who wrote about them in a 1946 article in  Science, titled On the Theory of Scales of Measurement. Each level of measurement and its corresponding scale is able to measure one or more of the four properties of measurement, which include identity, magnitude, equal intervals, and a minimum value of zero. There is a hierarchy of these different levels of measurement. With the lower levels of measurement (nominal, ordinal), assumptions are typically less restrictive and data analyses are less sensitive. At each level of the hierarchy, the current level includes all the qualities of the one below it in addition to something new. In general, it is desirable to have higher levels of measurement (interval or ratio) rather than a lower one. Let’s examine each level of measurement and its corresponding scale in order from lowest to highest in the hierarchy. The Nominal Level and Scale A nominal scale is used to name the categories within the variables you use in your research. This kind of scale provides no ranking or ordering of values; it simply provides a name for each category within a variable so that you can track them among your data. Which is to say, it satisfies the measurement of identity, and identity alone. Common examples within sociology include the nominal tracking of  sex (male or female),  race  (white, Black, Hispanic, Asian, American Indian, etc.),  and class  (poor, working class, middle class, upper class). Of course, there are many other variables one can measure on a nominal scale. The nominal level of measurement is also known as a categorical measure  and is considered qualitative in nature. When doing statistical research and using this level of measurement, one would use the mode, or the most commonly occurring value, as a  measure of central tendency. The Ordinal Level and Scale Ordinal scales are used when a researcher wants to measure something that is not easily quantified, like feelings or opinions. Within such a scale the different values for a variable are progressively ordered, which is what makes the scale useful and informative. It satisfies both the properties of identity and of magnitude. However, it is important to note that as such a scale is not quantifiable—the precise differences between the variable categories are unknowable. Within sociology, ordinal scales are commonly used to measure peoples views and opinions on social issues,  like racism  and sexism, or how important certain issues are to them in the context of a political election. For example, if a researcher wants to measure the extent to which a population believes that racism is a problem, they could ask a question like How big a problem is racism in our society today? and provide the following response options: its a big problem, it is somewhat a problem, it is a small problem, and racism is not a problem. When using this level and scale of measurement, it is the median which denotes central tendency. The Interval Level and Scale Unlike nominal and ordinal scales, an interval scale is a numeric one that allows for ordering of variables  and provides a precise, quantifiable understanding of the differences between them (the intervals between them). This means that it satisfies the three properties of identity, magnitude,  and  equal intervals. Age is a common variable that sociologists track using an interval scale, like 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. One can also turn non-interval, ordered variable categories into an interval scale to aid  statistical analysis. For example,  it is common to measure income as a range, like $0-$9,999; $10,000-$19,999; $20,000-$29,000, and so on. These ranges can be turned into intervals that reflect the increasing level of income, by using 1 to signal the lowest category, 2 the next, then 3, etc. Interval scales are especially useful because they not only allow for measuring the frequency and percentage of variable categories within our data, they also allow us to calculate the  mean, in addition to the median, mode. Importantly, with the interval level of measurement, one can also calculate  the standard deviation. The Ratio Level and Scale The ratio scale of measurement is nearly the same as the interval scale, however, it differs in that it has an absolute value of zero, and so it is the only scale that satisfies all four properties of measurement. A sociologist would use a ratio scale to measure actual earned income in a given year, not divided into categorical ranges, but ranging from $0 upward. Anything that can be measured from absolute zero can be measured with a ratio scale, like for example the number of children a person has, the  number of elections a person has voted in, or the  number of friends who are of a race different from the respondent. One can run all the statistical operations as can be done with the interval scale, and even more with the ratio scale. In fact, it is so called because one can create ratios and fractions from the data when one uses a ratio level of measurement and scale. Updated  by Nicki Lisa Cole, Ph.D.

Ethical Concerns Within Public Research - 928 Words

Ethics There are few ethical concerns within this research question. Firstly, it may be the case that the subjects can become distressed due to the sensitive nature of the research question. The Endocrine Part Of The Pancreas - 1609 Words

The endocrine part of the pancreas consists of pancreatic islets (islets of the Langerhans). Insulin and glucagon are hormones secreted by islet cells of the pancreas. Both of these hormones are secreted depending on the blood glucose levels. Alpha cells of the pancreatic islets secrete glucagon and beta cells of the pancreatic islets secrete insulin (Marieb, 2012). Insulin and glucagon are equally vital in managing blood glucose, making sure the body functions well. Glucose, which comes from the food we eat, is important for every body system. A decline in the blood glucose level below its normal range causes the nervous system to function erratically because glucose is its main source of energy. Insulin and glucagon hormones partner†¦show more content†¦Some of the fatty acids are converted by the liver into acidic ketones as fats are broken down, (Lienhard, G., 1992), which are released into the blood stream. Insulin is normally secreted by the beta cells (a type of islet cell) of the pancreas. Insulin secretion is triggered by high blood glucose level and increased parasympathetic stimulation that is associated with digestion of a meal. Decreased insulin secretion results from decreasing blood glucose levels and from stimulation by the sympathetic division of the nervous system (Seeley and Stephens, 2005). Sympathetic stimulation of the pancreas increase during physical activities. Decreased insulin levels allow blood glucose to be conserved to provide the brain with adequate glucose and to allow other tissues to metabolize fatty acids and glycogen stored in the cells. Insulin binds to membrane–bound receptors and, either directly or indirectly, increases the rate of glucose and amino acid uptake in different tissues. Service Organization Plays Out Capacities †Myassignmenthelp.Com

Question: Discuss About The Service Organization Plays Out Its Capacities? Answer: Introduction Basically, a service organization plays out its capacities and operations by organizing its back and front stage divisions, which create and offer products and services by understanding the requirements of clients. This paper includes the reflective essay on different aspects of service in hospitality organization. This essay will examine the flow- diagrams for front and back stage operations of a service industry association, i.e. InterContinental Hotels. Further, it will clarify the importance of service experience and service encounter. Toward the end, it will elaborate the managerial implications by looking at the flow charts for different stages. Flow Charts Flow charts of service delivery is produced and outlined by considering the standard of services, culture, needs and desires of visitors and guests and services of contenders. Service implies understanding the desires and requests of clients, procedure of offering the services, assessment of the obstacles and associated costs, which requires for the administration of the standard of quality in service organizations (Armstrong et al, 2015). In this report, flow charts of hospitality organization, i.e. InterContinental Hotels, are created, which will be exceptionally helpful in dealing with the method of developing and conveyance of data, services to achieve the goal of business in more operative and expert way. Front Stage Flow Chart I am working at InterContinental Hotels, where I have seen their operations and flow of services. Hotels are using front office flow chart for managing the data and services according to the international trends and to meet the expectations and requirements of clients. When I was working at InterContinental Hotels, I witnessed that the main aspects of front stage operations of service organization is assisting in improving the communication and interaction with the visitors to collect the data about these guests and then discuss with the back stage departments about offering services to customers according to their needs and expectations (Bitner and Wang, 2014). When I joined this well-recognized organization, i.e. InterContinental Hotels, then I saw that the organizations front stage flow chart incudes various activities and steps. These activities includes like; making reservation for the visitors, managing the check-in details, organizing the waiting area and operating the rooms. Additionally, the front stage department also notes about the check-out details. At this hotel group, my role is to assist the guests related to the hotel and food services (Grnroos, Edvardsson, and Sheth, 2013). At InterContinental Hotels, I experienced that front stage staff of hotel are performing the duties and responsibilities as per predetermined schedule and standard and procedure to attain the goals of organization. After looking at the front stage flow chart of the InterContinental Hotels, I can say that this process of the organization is effective and assisting the hotels in attaining its preset objectives. The front office flow chart of this hotel reflects that the organization is making decisions on the basis of information and details of customers, which are provided by the reception members for every client. This flow chart directs the back stage staff for enhancing the service delivery (Srensen et al, 2013). I felt that the chart and process is supporting InterContinental Hotels to have resources and organize the functions and operations as per the expectations and needs of guests and current trends in the industry. Back Stage Flow Chart For InterContinental Hotels, back office process has a significant role in executing the internal functions and operations. When I worked at InterContinental Hotels, I come to know that there are some services and operations, which are executed by back office. These functions are such as; attending the phone calls and replying the mails by filling the forms (You, 2014). Moreover, other operations are like; cleaning of rooms and waiting area, housekeeping and post operational functions. These activities have a significant role in maintaining the standards and quality of services. It assists in developing operational plan of organization. This plan is recommended by the senior leaders and managers by utilizing the information that is provided by the staff of front stage. Regardless of this, I believed that back stage flow chart has flexibility because it can be altered by senior management as per the situations and dealing with the needs and demands of travellers. ; Significance of service encounter Service encounter is an important aspect in the service delivery by any service organization. It includes the exchange between the customers and service providers, in which clients experience two different aspects, i.e. behavioral and relationship aspect and service aspect. It has significant value in the field of hotel and hospitality services. For InterContinental Hotels, that is operating business operations in hospitality sector, needs managing the quality and standards to endure the current position in the market (Kindstrm and Kowalkowski, 2014). Taking personal experience at InterContinental Hotels, I realized that for getting competitive advantage, management of hotels always makes efforts to improve the service encounter by looking at the current industry trends and requirements of potential customers. The organization thinks that effective interaction between customers and organization impact the quality and process of delivery services, that consists of different types of service encounter with the management and employees. There may be three types of service encounter at InterContinental Hotels, i.e. remote counter, indirect counter and direct personal counter. At the hotels, the management makes the decisions after considering all the forms of service encounter (Grnroos and Grnroos, 2016). After that, the organization executes its activities and operations and assigns the tasks and responsibilities to the team. This entire procedure of hotels can assist it in enhancing the effectiveness and productivity of the organiza tional activities to get the predetermined goals. Working at InterContinental Hotels, I found that they are providing high quality services to their customers. It shows that their service encounter was better than other competitors in the hospitality industry. I realized that the hotels are very good in delivering services on time and maintaining the quality of food menus. Along with this, they are offering spas, gym and some other complimentary services. In spite of this, there may be some factors, which can raise issues in the successful service encounter (Mattsson and Chadee, 2015). These issues are like; immoral behavior of back and front stage staff and some frustrating demands of guests. After looking at InterContinental Hotels, I analyzed that this service organization is implementing remote, indirect and direct service encounter for keeping the best quality of hotel services. This hotel group is preferably using indirect service encounter to understand the demands and expectations of visitors. It is done by conducting market research and taking feedback from guests. Moreover, this organization is also considering the safety and security in offering successful service encounter. Managerial Implications It is very important to understand the managerial implications of service encounter at hotels. The value and worth of its business activities can be monitored by evaluating the service encounter between workforce and clients. Communication process plays a vital role in this, as it helps in analyzing the potential and needs of guests for sustaining the efficacy of service quality. As per my experience at InterContinental Hotels, I can say that service encounter and appropriate analysis of activities and services may have huge impact on managerial effectiveness and brand image of hotels. I came to know that there are some activities like; attending the visitors, listening to their needs and offering them some additional services, have large impact on process of management of any service organization. Though, InterContinental Hotels possess good brand reputation and offering best quality services, but still there is absence of service encounter. It is affecting the managerial approach o f organization adversely (Grnroos, 2007). The management should take some actions to fill the gaps. The managers should implement the strategies to know the needs and expectations of clients. The workforce at hotels needs to become more efficient and ethical. They have to understand their responsibilities towards hotels and guests. After this analysis, I suggest that this managerial implication of InterContinental Hotels may help them to achieve its targets and improve the service delivery. Thus, this reflective essay can help in understanding some aspects of service organizations. The organizations require establishing the front stage and back stage flow chart to allocate the services to different teams. Service encounter is an essential part for the any service organization, especially for the hospitality organizations; like; InterContinental Hotels. As a potential investor who needs to invest in Origin Energy, this paper needs to provide key analysis of its financial performance, financial position and the cash-flow management. The investor needs to know the profitability, cash management and liquidity of the Origin Energy and well as detailed understanding of the , companys performance and management of the company. This will include P/E ratio = (Market Price/Earnings per share), Earning per sha re ratio = (Profit after tax/No. of ordinary shares), dividends per share ratio = (Total dividends of the year/total number of ordinary shares) *100, dividends yield percentage = (dividends per share/market per share) *100, profitability and liquidity ratios to get an overall view of how the company is performing. Profitability, cash management and liquidity The earning per share of the company can be categorized as diluted and basic. The basic EPS for year June, 2015, June 2016 and June 2017 are given as (0.52), (0.37) and (1.27) whereas the diluted EPS for the same years are given as (0.52), (0.37) and (1.27) same as the basic ones. The EBITDA for the same years are presented as 475, 426 and (1,178). The dividend for the last three years have also been presented as 0.48, 0.11 and no dividend in 2017. The dividend payout ratio is given as 116.3 in 2015 and there was no dividend in 2016 and 2017. The dividend yield percentage for the last three years have been given as 4.39, 5.64 and 1.7 for 2014, 2015 and 2016. In terms of profitability, the EBT margin for the company for the past four years are given as 5.15, -4.62, -6.18 and -15.21. The ROE has been given as ratio has been given as 3.97, -5.03, -4.33 and -17.19. The return on invested capital for 2014 through 2017 include 4.16, -1.79, -1.28 and -8.63. In terms of cash flow ratios, the free cash flow/net income from 2014 to 2017 include 2.56, -0.15, -1.21 and -0.39. The free cash flow/sales percentage for the same period included 9.35, 0.86, 5.98 and 6.38. In terms of liquidity/financial health, the current ration from 2014 to 2017 include 0.97, 1.62, 1.24 and 1.3 while quick ratio include 0.86, 0.48, 0.92 and 0.71. The financial leverage include 2.32, 2.62, 1.99 and 2.21 whereas the debt/equity ratio for 2014 to 2017 include 0.67, 0.93, 0.66 and 0.74. Companys performance, management of the company The financial results of the company has not been performing well in the last three years. As reflected in the analysis, it is clear that Origin is not promising for the investment. There has been a decline trend in most of the ration as indicated in the above analysis. For example, in terms of profitability, there has been a decreasing from the 2014 through 2017. The ROE percentages declined to negative values from +3.97 in 2014 to -17.19 in the year 2017. This is an indication of less performance and negative returns and hence the investor needs not to invest in the company. Also, in terms of the return on capital invested there has been a decreasing trend in from 2014 to 2017 from +4.16 in 2014 to -8.63 in 2017. This is a further justification that things are not well in Origin and hence it is not appealing for the potential investors (Henderson, Peirson, Herbohn and Howieson 2015). Also the interest coverage also show a declining trend between 2014 and 2017 from +2.65 to negative 2.75. Such decreasing trend was also noticed in net margin that decreased from +3.65 to -16.31 between 2014 and 2017. The asset turnover (average) and the return on assets also declined between the periods. Also, financial leverage (average) recorded a declining trend from 2014 to 2017 from positive 2.32 to 2.21. The firm is not also appealing for potential investment in terms of its financial performance. For example, the earnings per share showed a declining trend between 2014 and 2017 indicated by +0.4 in 2014 to -1.26 in 2017. This means that this trend will still continue and hence the potential investor will lose his investment in case he invests in the company. Also, the dividends showed a declining trend between the period with 2014, 2015 and 2017 figure being +0.49, +0.48, +0.1. This is a clear indication of the decrease in profitability of the firm and hence less dividends being paid. The dividend payout ratio also showed were rising between 2012 and 2015 at 75.9 and 116.3 but there were no dividend payout in the subsequent years through 2017. The operating cash flow also showed a declining trend and reduced from 2227 in 2014 to 1289 in 2017 while free cash flow per share were rising and decreasing between the periods. In terms of growth performance, the dividend yield percentage increased between 2014 (4.39) and 2015 (5.64) but sharply dropped to 1.70 in 2016. This was a clear indication of rough times ahead in the company and hence not advisable for any investment by the potential investor. The current market potential is as weak as can be seen from the analysis of key ratios. This can be demonstrated by the declining profitability of the firm. It is advisable that the potential investor need not to invest in the firm until some promising figures are realized which, however, do not seem to be the case any soon (Bjrnson, Hoydis, Kountouris and Debbah 2014). Origin, however, may have a future potential by when the returns on massive investments in the renewable energy picks up well. The company will still do better in the future by changing the strategies and ensuring that only better strategies are prioritized. The firms current business current business strategy is the integrated energy company that is operational throughout 3 segments of energy supply chain including natural gas as well as oil exploration and production, energy retailing as well as electricity generation. The company draws its strength via the integration-fuel integrated generated and the retailer. The firms strategic focus stays on competitive segments of Australian as well as New Zealand energy markets with potential opportunities in rapid growing energy market in the Asian region. Origin further seeks to deepen the integration within the business crossways energy supply chain to become more effective manger in terms of risks and create growth opportunities (Flammer 2015). I terms of CSR rating, Origin is rated 56 CSR rating compared to all the companies. The energy production means that the firm has to interact hugely with the environment. However, Origin undertakes to disclose the effects of its operation on the environment and what it is doing to minimize the risks to the community where it operates. However, the company has not disclosed all the non-financial information and this is critical to the potential investors since it determines the reputation of the company and hence profits. From the sustainability report, the firm has disclosed its developments in the renewable energy as measure to be sustainable and create the sustainable environment (Ngo, Larsson and Marzetta 2013). One of the major strength in the management of Origin relies on the existence of qualified and motivated staff. This is critical to the potential investor as this has a direct impact on the organization in future financial years. For example, the management team thrives to ensure that change the business model and strategy by ensuring that they engage in the production of green energy which will boost their efficiency. The potential investor is more concerned with the long-term viability of the business for continuous dividend payment. Therefore, with the qualified and determined Origin management team, it is expected that once the renewable energy production is fully implemented the firm will starting improving in terms of its financial performance and profitability and this will attract the investors as the stock performance will improve (Minton, Taillard and Williamson 2014). Origin Energy has adopted various types of remuneration trends from last year to this year for the highest earners. For example, the firm is using the stock for its employees. This is essential as it motivates workers to work hard. Many employees are taking the stock option compensation and this can be attracted to the potential investors who would want to see the stock performance and the dividend payout ratio and yield rising. However, Origin pays less than other companies in terms variation in wages (Lewis, Walls and Dowell 2014). This is a critical concern to the investor as it might lead to staff turnover and hence making the company to lose its qualified and determined staff. The company also give non-wage benefits including the bonuses for better performers. The bonuses are means of motivation its workers and this creates an increasingly inspired workforce in the organization. The current management structure and ownership structure of the firm is under the oversight of the Board. Origin Energys Board is under the chairmanship of H. Kevin Mccann who is an independent non-executive. There are other 8 directors who help in run the Origin at the board levels (Gillingham, Rapson and Wagner 2016). Some board members are non-executive whiles others are executive directors. Apart from the Board, Origin has an executive management team under the executive General Manager Energy markets, Frank Calabria, group general counsel and company secretary, Andrew Clarke. Executive general manager major development project Andrew Stock and other five executive members. The institution ownership of Origin accounts for 18.57% while insider ownership account for 0.13%, the general public ownership accounts 80.94% and private accounts for 0.15%. Conclusion/Recommendation The main need for potential investor in Origin is to invest in the company stock/shares. But, as things stand now, Origin is not performing well and has not even paid the dividend in 2016. Therefore, it is recommended to the potential investor not to invest in Origin at the moment. There is a need to wait for the company to fully benefit from its potential integrated business strategy. Investment in the firm at the moment will make the potential investor lose. This is because Origin Energys profitability is declining as indicated by the negative profitability figures. For example, EBT margin for the company for the past four years are given as 5.15, -4.62, -6.18 and -15.21. The economic cause for lack of profitability is due to the 2.20 billon loss at the APLNG. That even led to the firm declaring no dividend in 2016/17. This means the firm is not profitable enough for the potential investor to invest. As has been acknowledged in the report, there has not been dividend paid out in 20 16 and the trend will not change in 2017 either. Therefore, the potential investor needs to look for new business with rising and predictable performance to invest their money in to get attractive returns on investment. Origin Energy is still in the process of adopting the renewable energy and this will bring more benefits to the firm once full integrated in its trio-business model. There is a promising future in the firm coupled with its strong Board of Management and the Executive Management. References Barbose, G.L., Goldman, C.A., Hoffman, I.M. and Billingsley, M., 2013. Time As A Determinate Of Final Product In A Dehydration Reaction Essay Example For Students

Time As A Determinate Of Final Product In A Dehydration Reaction Essay Time as a Determinate of Final Product in a Dehydration ReactionRobert Simack, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Alaska Fairbanks, Fairbanks, Alaska. Abstract: This study involved acid dehydration of 2-methylcyclohexanol. The results varied depending on the time elapsed after initial reaction. I attempted to prove the Evelyn Effect, which stated that over a period of time the products of the aforementioned reaction will beobserved to change volume so that those products formed by a cis isomer of 2-methylcyclohexanol will form first. However, once all molecules in the cis isomer undergo reaction the remaining trans configured 2-methylcyclohexanols will proliferate during the latter period of the reaction. I also postulated as to the possible formulation of 1-ethylcyclopentene, and to the cause of such an event. We will write a custom essay on Time As A Determinate Of Final Product In A Dehydration Reaction specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Introduction: After researching acid-catalyzed dehydration reactions (McMurray) and background on the Evelyn Effect (Clausen) I hypothesize that the cis isomer of 2-methylcyclohexanol will react via an E1 type process forming 1-methylcyclohexene according to predictions from Zaitzevs rule (Lehman). This should be due to the fact that the cis isomer has 2 anti-coplanar hydrogens. These two hydrogens should make the molecule more reactive. The trans isomer, with only one anti-coplanar hydrogen, should be slower to react and will form a 3-methylcyclohexene. In addition the 1-ethylcyclopentene will be formed from both the cis and trans isomers but only if the hydroxyl group is in an equatorial position. In that position electrons from the ring may attack the alcohol directly from behind pushing it off the ring and forming a five-membered ring instead. Results ; Discussion: An NMR (300MHz) spectra of the original reagent and the three fractions provided a huge amount of information in support of my hypothesis. Both cis and trans isomers were present in the spectra for the original material as well as for the first two fractions. The alcohols hydrogen showed up at approximately 3.79 and 3.1 for cis and trans respectively. In the spectra for pure starting material (ref: Jim Starr /Steve Standish NMR 24 March, 2000) cis isomers of starting material comprised only 25% of the sample compared to 75% of trans as observed in the integration of peaks. In the spectra for fraction one a 3:1 ratio of trans to cis was observed. In the spectra of fraction two the cis isomer nearly disappeared; the ratio was roughly 6:1 trans/cis. Finally, in the spectra of the third fraction the cis isomer was absolutely imperceptible while the integration of trans was nearly twice that of the integration from fraction one. These spectra show that cis reacted fi rst and was quickly consumed by the reaction leaving trans isomers to finish the reaction. Because it is known that the reaction with cis starting material caused both 3-methylcyclohexene and 1-methylcyclohexene I postulated that the foremost product of the latter stages of the reaction must be 3-methylcyclohexene, which is the sole product of the trans reaction (McMurray, chap. 11.12). In addition to the cis and trans peaks the peaks for both 3-methylcyclohexene and 1-methylcyclohexene could be found on the spectra at 5.7 and 5.4 respectively. The NMR showed that the integration of 1-methylcyclohexene dropped only slightly throughout the reaction while the integration of 3-methylcyclohexene increased nearly tenfold. The findings from the spectra prove the hypothesis that the cis reaction will go the fastest followed by the trans because as the cis is consumed its peak at 3.79 will decrease as well as the peak for 1-methylcyclohexene due to termination of that products formation. Also, peaks for 1-ethylcyclopentene begin to show in the spectra for the second fraction and increase in size (area beneath the peak) by the spectra of the third fraction. At the root of this phenomena is steric hinderance. Both the cis and trans isomers will form 1-ethylcyclopentene (fig. 1). However, because of steric hinderance the trans isomer is favored to form the 1-ethylcyclopentene. This fact will explain why more of the pentene shows up in the third fraction. .ucb0d8b367cbe537fb5a26519d8487950 , .ucb0d8b367cbe537fb5a26519d8487950 .postImageUrl , .ucb0d8b367cbe537fb5a26519d8487950 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ucb0d8b367cbe537fb5a26519d8487950 , .ucb0d8b367cbe537fb5a26519d8487950:hover , .ucb0d8b367cbe537fb5a26519d8487950:visited , .ucb0d8b367cbe537fb5a26519d8487950:active { border:0!important; } .ucb0d8b367cbe537fb5a26519d8487950 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ucb0d8b367cbe537fb5a26519d8487950 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ucb0d8b367cbe537fb5a26519d8487950:active , .ucb0d8b367cbe537fb5a26519d8487950:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ucb0d8b367cbe537fb5a26519d8487950 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ucb0d8b367cbe537fb5a26519d8487950 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ucb0d8b367cbe537fb5a26519d8487950 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ucb0d8b367cbe537fb5a26519d8487950 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ucb0d8b367cbe537fb5a26519d8487950:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ucb0d8b367cbe537fb5a26519d8487950 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ucb0d8b367cbe537fb5a26519d8487950 .ucb0d8b367cbe537fb5a26519d8487950-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ucb0d8b367cbe537fb5a26519d8487950:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Coordinate WSH Management System with Legal Compliance EssayFinally, a tiny peak showed at 4.6 in every fractions spectra indicating the presence of methylenecyclohexane. This product formed from the original product by acid catalyst. Experimental: An apparatus was constructed with a round bottom flask topped by a claisen adaptor in which was placed a thermometer and a condensing tube. In the apparatus 150mmole of 2-methylcyclohexanol was mixed with 5mL H3PO4 and distilled. The distilled liquid was collected in three tubes, at approximately 4mL per tube, labeled fraction 1, 2 and 3. Each fraction was placed in a centrifuge tube and combined with 4mL saturated NaHCO3. The aqueous layer was removed and MgSO4 was added for a final separation. The solid and aqueous layers were then removed and the final product was combined with CDCL3 in an NMR tube in preparation for spectra. The liquid remaining in the original apparatus was put through the separation process described above. However, instead of CDCL3 as a spectrum reagent we used CH2CL2. Also, an NMR was not performed on the remaining liquid but instead a GC. Figure 1: Reactions of cis and trans isomers of 2-methylcyclohexanol during acid-catalyzed dehydration. War and The Holocaust essays

War and The Holocaust essays As the old saying goes, there are always two sides to every story. This rings true for war and the Holocaust. There were individuals who were in support of war, albeit their knowledge of its destructive powers, and there were some people who saw its disadvantages through their own eyes, and were therefore vehemently against it. One side saw war and the Holocaust as a positive step towards progress and development, while another side saw unjust destruction and death. Both Bernhardi and Mussolini saw benefits of war for European culture, but Remarque, Monks and Graebe saw, through their own actual experiences, that the benefits acquired through war did not outweigh the disadvantages that it unleashed. In his essay, General Friedrich Von Bernhardi defended the act of war, saying that humankind cannot escape it. He says that, ...the struggle between nations is inevitable... (Bernhardi 177). Furthermore, he says that the development of a country could be, for the most part, attributed to battle. Bernhardi mentions that although war has its setbacks, it is also a creative and purifying power (Bernhardi 177), and a life-giving principle (Bernhardi 178). In addition, Bernhardi admits that war temporarily disturbs industrial life, interrupts quiet economic development...and emphasizes the primitive brutality of man. (Bernhardi 177), but says that war is a need that man has to heed, a biological necessity of the first importance (Bernhardi 177) that cannot be taken away from society. He further upholds his argument by defining the search for peace and the abolishment of war as a journey for the weak and cowardly. According to Bernhardi, ...this desire for peace has rendered most civiliz ed nations anaemic... (Bernhardi 177). Moreover, Bernhardi argues that war has greater benefits. According to Bernhardi, war will furnish...a nation with favourable vital conditions.....

What do you consider to be the major issues facing pblic education Essay

What do you consider to be the major issues facing pblic education today. Address one of the issues in depth, outlining possible causes, effects and resolutions - Essay Example Furthermore, recent budget cuts have even taken place as a result of economic recession. The consequence of decline in public education budget is that teachers are not being paid on time and due to this several teachers have stopped teaching at public schools. The qualities of education being provided to those who are dependent on public schools have even declined as a result of loss of quality teachers. One solution is to increase the budgets for public education by decreasing the budgets allocated to other sectors. Another solution is online education as it requires lower amount of investment (Christensen 1). A third solution is to provide underdeveloped teachers with appropriate training so the quality of education can be increased. One of the significant issues experienced by public education is decrease in the allocation of budget towards education sector. This is a major problem faced by modern day society as due to this issue, the future of society is at stake. Various solutions such as adoption of online education can be implemented to solve this

Michigan agricultural college a dream fullfiled Essay

Michigan agricultural college a dream fullfiled - Essay Example In 1850, the state constitutional convention called for the foundation of an Agricultural School under the provision of Article 13, Section 11 – the Morrill Act enacted under Abraham Lincoln’s administration. Interestingly, it was first suggested that this Agricultural School would be part of the University of Michigan. In fact, then-president Henry Tappan lobbied for this school to be built in UM’s own Ann Arbor. However, John C. Holmes of the Michigan State Agricultural Society opposed this, on the ground that the school’s students may end up being neglected by UM. Luckily for him, then-Michigan Governor Kingsley S. Bingham saw things his way, mandating a bill commissioning the establishment of what was then called the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan. Eleven years later would be a moment in history for the school – it saw its first batch of graduates, as well as the Michigan Legislature that allowed it to offer four-year curriculum c ourses and grant degrees on par with more established universities. The beginnings of the Agricultural College were surprisingly humble. Under its first president, Joseph Williams, a member of Harvard’s Phi Beta Kappa in addition to being both an accomplished farmer and attorney, it started out with only three buildings and five professors, as well as a student body of 63. Luckily, Williams made the best of the situation, hiring a host of competent professors in the college’s first year. These professors then proceeded to set up sophisticated science laboratories in its College Hall, complete with equipment such as microscopes which were then thought to be state-of-the-art. Needless to say, Michigan Agricultural College flourished under President Williams’s tenure; even relatively early on in its existence, it boasted a wide array of theoretical and practical academics. The Michigan state legislature passed a bill in 1855, which
